All Replies on "Best" way to make mortises? Lumber. Jocks. com ~ woodworking community. Art – many of the aforementioned methods are great, some are just ok, but one thing for sure I’ve learned is each woodworker develops their own liking to the several approaches of mortise & tenons. I’ve never been one to jump in and say “oh buy the telescoping pocket fisher (late 7.
Fact is there has seldom ever been a one- shoe- fits- all tool that satisfies everyone and that’s partly because self- preference for each woodworker comes through naturally and forces a particular method. A super- expensive tool approach for the hobbyist isn’t necessarily what makes the “perfect” mortise, let alone tenon. DISCLAIMER: I of course wouldn’t tell my wife that and do realize some of the $5k dedicated M/T tools out there would be cool to have.
Listed a few of the standouts for me. Didn’t list a dedicated mortiser because I don’t personally care for them for several reasons, again just me and I’d prefer using a router for both M& Ts anyway. Domino - Nice dedicated mortising ONLY tool, why it’s not for me, too limited. Most who have it love it, so would I if I spent $8. You questioned whether it would make through mortises and I didn’t see it answered but maybe overlooked. Far as I can tell is it does NOT, albeit with a narrow enough medium I bet one could do a through- mortise. This tool didn’t meet my requirements for both mortise AND tenon (key work AND).
Just to ME, it isn’t even close to being worth over $1k for the nicer version of it, let alone $8. ONLY value with that tool but again that’s just me. Also didn’t care for ordering dominoes, although one could build their own and stamp in their own glue grooves, etc. Festool- Domino- DF- 5. Set/dp/B0. 04. SETSXE/ref=sr_1_1? UTF8& qid=1. 35. Leigh FMT Pro (alum version with better clamps) – Looks like a fantastic tool that doess both mortise & tenons and does them easily, any angle M/T which for rockers (my fav) is a wonderful feature.
Downside and reason I passed over this jig besides it costing $1k was the limited height. Oh sure I could clamp this tool to my roof for a 6’ through- tenon for a park bench for Uncle Freddy in Canada, but I won’t. So comfy table height (roughly for most 3. Leigh Super FMT) Also for both of Leigh’s M/T jigs, they nickel & dime you for the little plastic templates to do a wider selection of M/T sizes, which for what you pay for the jig itself is just unnecessary. Leigh Super FMT – is stamped their steel less expensive version (lol), subpar clamps were the only real complaint about this jig, otherwise nearly identical except for some guide mechanism details and $5. Assume your comfy with tenons on a bandsaw or tablesaw, etc. Personally I think the workpiece single clamp appears (just a designers observation) lacking, but I could be wrong.
Had they used a heavy clamp system like the Jessem Paralign Wood Dowel Jig, I’d have already bought this. You get a router guide and several templates and it does through mortises up to 1/2” x 3- 1/2” long which should cover your through- mortise requirement. Jessem Zip Slot Mortise Mill – Looks capable with mortise capability of 3- 1/2” long for $2. I personally question a drill motor even with the best up- spiral bit handling a long mortise like that.
Nice piece of machinery, typical for Jessem. Pantorouter – (MY CHOICE AT THE MOMENT & UNDER CONSTRUCTION) No limits to mortise or tenon depth or work piece height limitations. Humble $1. 8 for the plans from . The concept centers around the pantograph principle using a router. It’ll replicate 1: 1 mortise & tenons from templates you build once and save. It will do the same for shudder mortises, dovetails, finger joints and the skys the limit. Parts cost maybe $1.
The tools capability from doing shudders, to finger joints, dovetail joints or anything you decide to build a template for along with handling any length of medium/workpiece really caught my eye. If you want a detailed review see my Pantorouter build see My Projects)http: //woodgears. Nice writeup by someone who built it (did a nice job on their pantorouter) – http: //woodgears. EXAMPLE PICS (not mine – my build for the Pantorouter is in My Projects).
